Achille Van Sassenbrouck who, wounded by a shell at the age of 29, radically changes his way of painting, passing from a rather naïve realistic style to a Fauvist style imbued with expressionist features.
This break is perfectly visible through two self-portraits, one from 1915 and the other from 1918;
in the latter, entitled Self-portrait in uniform, the physical and psychological suffering caused by the accident (he has lost the use of one eye and had serious nervous disorders) is expressed by an explosion of bright colors that he applies heavily and delimits with a black line, highlighting in particular his crippled eye.
