Floris Jespers undertook 3 extended holidays in Belgian Congo.
The first in 1951, when they went to visit their son Marc, who was working there in a hospital in Katanga.
He returned 3 times and stayed each time a year.
This work, representing a market in Kimba, near Kinshasa (formerly Léopoldville), is cubistic in nature and very much under influence of the Tribal Art.
There is an interesting movement in the arms and legs of the portrayed women.
The subtile juxtaposition of the pale yellow of the garments, the aquamarine and dusty pink of the back-and foreground, makes this a wonderful composition.
