It is difficult to date this drawing. It could be round 1920, in comparison with the painting in the Museum of Antwerp (KMSKA, inv. 3330). The cubistic representation of a couple bares, in mirror image, a resemblance in posture of the man, although the woman’s hand is stretched in the drawing.
The drawing style of this work is comparable with the poetry album Wijding. Muziek der Sferen, by Willem Van Den Aker, ed. in Antwerp in 1924.
Here you have the same futuristic rendering of the background and the hatching in the in the figures.
The movie Metropolis came out in 1926 and was shown in Antwerp round that time.
Van Dooren had similar visions of futuristic cities as did Fritz Lang.
Although the futuristic views of Van Dooren predates that of Lang, the pair could represent Freder Fredersen and Maria, the heroes from the movie.
